We call our donors "superheroes"
(Donor: benefactor; someone who gives to benefit others; philanthropist; someone who takes action out of compassion or regard for others.)
Certainly, our donors are worthy of all the above more general descriptions. And just like the superheroes of fiction and movies, our donors actually do save lives.
Our South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) superheroes don’t wear fancy suits, or fly through the air without wings. Our donors are everyday people who could be your neighbour, your work colleague, your cousin – they could also be you.
Without our two sets of donors, the Registry wouldn’t operate or even exist. And people with life-threatening blood diseases could die.
Our one set of donors is made up of those people who register to be potential stem cell donors should they prove to be a match to someone with a life-threatening blood disease, whose last resort is a stem cell transplant.
GENEROUS HELPERS
Our other set of donors is made up of people who make financial donations to cover the costs of our national and often international search to find a match for the patient.
Because the two sets of donors are so closely tied together, they are the core of the SA Bone Marrow Registry’s function – with the one set unable to be of benefit without the other.
To be a stem cell donor superhero requires the following:
- Donors should be between the ages of 16 and 45 years;
- Be in good health,
- And register through a simple mouth swab.
